Depending on your child’s age, consider appointing an “Electronics Deputy.” This junior safety officer can help identify unused electronics, keep devices away from liquids, and spot overloaded outlets. Celebrate their efforts with small rewards to reinforce good habits. Another great activity is creating a family fire drill plan. Talk about fire prevention and practice your escape route together. Make it a game by rewarding kids who follow the plan and make it safely outside.
Make Safety Fun—But Keep It Serious
Games and incentives are great tools, but it’s essential that children understand the real dangers of electricity. One of the most critical lessons: never go near downed power lines.
Explain that power lines, transformers, and substations can be extremely dangerous and should be avoided—even if they don’t look active. A downed line can still carry electricity and energize nearby objects like fences or trees. If your child sees one, they should immediately tell an adult who can contact KEC.

- Don’t overcrowd electrical outlets.
- Keep water far away from anything electrical.
- Only fly kites in open areas and away from electric poles, overhead power lines and trees.
