KEC Warns of Utility Scam

Kootenai Electric Cooperative (KEC) would like to warn its members about a scam that has impacted our business members. According to reports, scammers have contacted KEC members claiming to be with another local utility claiming their bill is overdue and needs to be paid immediately. When questioned, the scammers claim they are being contracted by Kootenai Electric. If payment is refused, they will threaten to change their meter and disconnect the service.

KEC members should follow these tips to avoid falling for this scam and others:

·         Call KEC at (208) 765-1200 to verify whether a person is a KEC employee (or contracted by KEC) and the purpose of the contact.

·         Members should never provide account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone unless you initiated the call.

·         If you receive a call claiming to be your utility company or a contractor for your utility company and feel pressured for payment hang up and call the number on your utility bill.
