Since electric service is billed after it has been used, Kootenai Electric Cooperative (KEC) may require payment of a refundable security deposit before or during service.

Why a deposit may be required

A deposit may be required based on several factors, including but not limited to the following:

  • Prior credit history or lack of credit history
  • Poor payment history with KEC
  • Returned or non-sufficient funds payments
  • Disconnection of service for late or non-payment
  • An unpaid final bill or a previously written-off KEC account
  • Tampering with KEC equipment
  • Misrepresentation of identity
How deposits are calculated

Initial deposit amounts are calculated as follows:

  • Two times the highest monthly bill at the service location during the previous 24 months rounded to the nearest $10.00.
  • If 24 months of billing information is not available, a minimum deposit of $200.00 is required for residential and general service accounts and $750.00 for commercial and irrigation accounts. Minimum deposits may be adjusted based on the size and use of a building.
When deposits are credited or refunded

Once paid in full, the deposit will be credited to the account after 12 consecutive months of on-time payments or when the account is closed, whichever comes first, provided there is no negative payment history or adverse account or service activity that would require a deposit to be billed.
